This
sculpture is carved on natural slate and includes a hanging
framework made of bamboo and jute. The
Japanese calligraphy reads "Karate" and roughly
translates to "Empty Hand".
Karate is a martial art that was
originally developed without weapons (empty handed) as a means
of self defense. The areas around the characters on this stone
have been carved away to make the characters look like they
stick out from the stone (reverse carving)
