This sculpture is carved on natural slate and includes a hanging framework made of bamboo and jute.  The Japanese calligraphy reads "Karate" and roughly translates to "Empty Hand".  Karate is a martial art that was originally developed without weapons (empty handed) as a means of self defense. The characters on this piece are carved into the surface of the slate
