This sculpture is carved on natural slate and includes a hanging framework made of bamboo and jute.  The Japanese calligraphy reads "Kendo" and roughly translates to "The way of the sword". Kendo is a Japanese swordsmanship martial art and sport.  The characters are carved by hand with a chisel and then is accentuated with dark pigment.
